Daf James is a prolific, award-winning Welsh creator working across theatre, television, and radio. His work is remarkably polymathic, often blending his skills as a playwright, lyricist, and composer. He rose to significant prominence with the success of Lost Boys & Fairies, an Emmy and BAFTA award winning BBC drama that showcased his ability to craft deeply emotional, bilingual narratives centred on queer identity and family.
James’s work is characterized by a 'musicality of language', whether he is writing a traditional script or a full-scale musical. He has a PhD in Theatre, and his ability to move seamlessly between English and Welsh languages, and between the worlds of gritty drama and soaring composition, makes him one of the most distinctive contemporary voices in British arts today.
"Daf James' score, sometimes echoing Welsh hymns sometimes African rhythms, has succeeded in haunting me ... I find myself singing 'Shadowland, Shadowland', wishing I could hear the songs again."
