Frequently asked questions

It all began with a simple idea fuelled by a passion for contemporary opera and musicals. At Opera & Musicals, we pride ourselves on personal attention and dedication to every detail.

What are the most common questions people ask you about getting a licence for an opera or musical?

The most common question we receive is: For how long does the licence last? The duration of each licence is for a 12-week rehearsal and production period.

Could you tell us a bit about how someone actually gets a licence from you? What are the steps involved?

The steps involved are straightforward: you complete the contract, which is downloadable from our website; you pay the upfront fee, and we will then send the required material electronically.

What key information do you think potential customers absolutely need to know before they decide to license one of your shows?

Potential customers need to know whether the show is suitable for their company, whether they have the singers required for the roles, and the musicians capable of playing the music. We provide detailed information on each production to help you assess its fit.

Do you offer refunds if we decide not to do the show?

If you have signed the contract, it is a binding agreement to do the show within the stipulated period. We may agree to extend the period but do not offer refunds.

Do you supply sample material to help me decide?

Yes, we do. Contact us directly to make such a request.

May we reduce the score ourselves if we don't have a 40- or 48-piece orchestra?

Unfortunately, we cannot allow that.

What types of organisations typically license your shows?

Our performing licenses are aimed at university conservatories, regional opera or musical theatre companies, and amateur dramatic societies.

How can I determine if a show is suitable for my company?

Each show page on our website provides detailed information about the production, including cast requirements, orchestral or instrumental requirements, and themes, to help you make an informed decision.

What kind of support do you offer licensees?

We provide all necessary materials electronically, including scores and librettos, and are available to answer any questions that may arise during your production planning.

How can I get in touch with you for more specific questions?

Please feel free to contact us via email at operaandmusicals@gmail.com or Whatsapp at +44 (0) 7594042704 for any further inquiries.

Can I extend the license?

Yes, but this will be dependent on whether other companies within the area have bought a license. Best to check with us.

Must I pay upfront for the media rights?

Yes.

How soon after payment will I receive the material?

Within 72 hours.

Do you sell a production or only the musical materials?

We do not sell the production of any of our shows. However, you may contact Cape Town Opera for their production of Mandela Trilogy.
