Mats Larsson Gothe

Composer

Mats Larsson Gothe is one of Sweden’s most prominent and versatile contemporary composers. Renowned for his emotional intensity and masterful orchestration, his work spans from intimate chamber music to large-scale symphonic pieces and acclaimed operas.

Gothe’s music is characterized by its dramatic nerve and a unique ability to weave lyrical melodies into complex, modern soundscapes. This narrative power is prominently displayed in his latest major opera, Selma (2026), a commissioned work for Wermland Opera about the life of Selma Lagerlöf, following the immense success of his Holocaust drama The Promise (Löftet, 2022) at the Royal Swedish Opera.

A recipient of the prestigious Rosenberg Prize (2024), Gothe continues to push the boundaries of the Swedish neo-tonal tradition, creating music that is as intellectually stimulating as it is deeply moving.

"Gothe's score is a triumph of intense rhythmicality, blending Stravinskian precision with a surging, dramatic pulse that never lets the audience go."
